This apk does exactly that with step by step instructions. Receive the json converted to xml and then use "SMS Backup & Restore" to import them all into your default messaging apk.

  marv quake: Works perfectly! I've extracted from Google Takeout backup of Hangouts history containing almost 20k messages into to a easy .xml file, then with no issues restored and reviewed all of them using SMS Backup&Restore apk. Why did Google squad not develop such primary and important program - only they know. For me, it doesn't matter now, because Lorenz Webber made a excellent piece of tool. Thank you!

  Andrew Tekle-Shirley: Takes a tiny bit to sync contacts with the chat history, but it's a good program if you wish to export your Hangout history to any another messenger apk! Definitely worth the 1$.

  Wesley Kirkland: It does what it says and it does it well with no crashing. I exported about 18K messages from Project Fi into the default messages apk. While it is really annoying having to choose a Smartphone number for each notice I can live with it. I looked at the JSON body and their is a property for the another parties smartphone number. If the developer used that and then failed over to manual that would be preferred.

  Bruce Lyon: As someone else mentioned, it is a pain to have to assign a smartphone number to each record exported but the apk did successfully import my old Hangouts sms messages into my fresh messaging apk. It was well worth the dollar and time spent to receive this done.

  Daudi Justin: The fact that you have to manually assign smartphone numbers to each text conversation makes this apk kinda useless, as I have hundreds of conversations. It would be good if the apk auto inserted the conversation name into the smartphone number field because the conversation name is the smartphone number for sms

  Jeff Hessenflow: Reasonable concept, however, it requires that I choose a telephone number for every single past contact before export can occur. If you have hundreds/thousands of various threads, this create the export largely unusable. The apk does not map any telephone number from the takeout zip without manually walking through every entry. Too time consuming to be considered useful for really big exports.

  Didn't work for me Unfortunately it was greater than the 15 min window for claiming a refund. Every time I run it, I receive as far as trying to import the zip file, and it crashes.

  Harwinder Singh Bhachu: Crashes I have over 100,000 messages and when parsing the json file, I receive the 'hangouts chat export has stopped' error. Sort it out or I ask for a refund
